CosmiTec's Love Letter, Issue #148 -- The Elemental Division In Synastry
March 21, 2017
Dear

Another busy and turbulent roller coaster month is on the horizon.

April 2017 is marked by four planetary stations and six planetary ingresses!

Moreover, stationing Saturn and Chiron are building a turbulent square (well into May), which is quite upsetting a combination, following mundane astrology.

In our featured article this month we delve into a method that gives a general but good view on a couple's overall compatibility.

Loving greetings
Luc De Jaeger

In general and on a mundane level, events are likely to happen around April 2-3, April 9-10, April 17, April 24 and/or April 30.

During this month of April, the following planetary configurations will affect some birthdays in particular:
  • If you are born around December 29, February 12, March 29, May 14, June 30, August 16, October 1 or November 15, this month of April is about dominating others thru strong will and determination, hindered progress, increased hardship and encountering stalemate situations.

There is construction work going on and some of you are doing laborious work physically.

Expect hard work and be tenacious.

  • If you are born around January 25, March 10-11, April 25, June 11, July 28, September 13, October 28 or December 12, this month of April is about dissatisfaction.

You may feel down emotionally and/or physically and lack some zest.

Situations keep dragging on and you may feel tired.

    Take care of your health!
Generally speaking and on a mundane level, April 2017 is marked by nothing less than four planetary stations and six planetary ingresses that we will analyze below.

Moreover, Chiron and stationing Saturn are building a turbulent square (well into May), which is quite upsetting a combination following mundane astrology.

If you are born around January 17, February 1, February 15-16, March 17-18, April 17, May 2, May 18, June 18, July 19-20, August 4, August 20, September 20, October 20, November 4, November 19 or December 18-19 you will likely face some hardship this month of April 2017.

Overall, expect a sobering month during which you won't be allowed to fly too high.

Just face the facts and change your mindset or change direction, if possible.

In many instances, your health can be compromised due to illness or injuries.

Saturn-Chiron clashes can be very stubborn and blocking progress.

Additionally, this month, the wide T-square in Cardinal signs between Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto in which Pluto in Capricorn is the apex body is still active but slowly fading.

Nevertheless, this T-square will be triggered on different occasions again till mid April.

We discussed this T-square already in our December 2016 forecast and won't repeat the meaning here again.

Let's focus on what the month has in store.

Around April 1 there is some kind of helplessness about being unable to change society or regain lost love.

There is some compulsion to use violence to achieve your goals and to bend reality.

Also, beware of hostile reactions about explanations about delays, confusion or laxity in meeting obligations.

It looks like you are the victim of outer situations that are beyond your control and that you want to escape.

Take more care of your health.

Some of you may face a huge problem that is going to change your life profoundly in really a major way.

If you are born around February 4, March 21, May 6, June 22, August 8, September 24, November 8 or December 22, the current astrological configurations may especially apply to you.

Gentle Venus enters compassionate Pisces around April 2-3 and prefers a harmonious and peaceful environment.

You can hardly stand disagreements and may quit when you feel attacked.

The entrance of Venus in Pisces marks a period where you feel more attracted to help the weak, the victims, the refugees, the addicted.

You may miss a loved one also -- for whatever reason.

Saturn at 27° Sagittarius stations and turns retrograde around April 6, suggesting that you are about to redefine and reconsider your beliefs, outlook and world view.

In Sagittarius-of-the-sky-is-the-limit, stationing Saturn will likely bring you back on earth to become more realistic.

Also, Sagittarius is the zodiac sign of law, religion and foreign affairs and will likely oblige to reconsider, reevaluate and/or withdraw certain laws and/or orders.

While direct Saturn is about building, re-trograde Saturn is about re-building.

Around April 7 the Sun at 18° Aries opposes retrograde Jupiter at 18° Libra, indicating compromised laws, beliefs and philosophies.

There is some financial activity or scheme going on around these days and you tend to exaggerate without hesitation.

There is publicity but either your reputation will be burnt by public criticism or you will be put in a lime light instead of in sunlight.

Retrograde Venus at 27° Pisces squares stationing retrograde Saturn at 27° Sagittarius around April 8, denoting these early April days are upsetting and disturbing your relationships (in the widest sense).

Separation is in the air and you feel disappointed and quite sad.

Love is currently "out of tune."

It's better to withdraw, leave a group or retreat instead of struggling to co-operate with others.

Interestingly, the same aspect and pattern will be active again around April 21.

Anyway, this aspect will likely affect you most if you are born around January 17, February 1, February 15-16, March 17-18, April 17, May 2, May 18, June 18, July 19-20, August 4, August 20, September 20, October 20, November 4, November 19 or December 18-19.

Around April 9-10 Mercury stations and turns retrograde at 4° Taurus.

As usual, when Mercury regresses, Geminis and Virgos (and Gemini and Virgo Ascendants) will feel the station most by experiencing some (minor) setbacks, delays and/or uncomfortable situations.

You may not feel too well and things just don't go your way now.

It's best not to take any important decisions and you better wait till Mercury turns direct again around May 3.

In mundane astrology, Mercury's station often coincides with periods of strikes here and there.

Expect disagreements (even anger), added irritation over delays for new beginnings, dissatisfaction, legal issues and/or separation of any kind around the April 11 Full Moon period.

However, some of you may be involved with construction work, buildings, doing home improvements and activities related to real estate, denoting the current astrological configurations may work out differently for some of you.

If you are born around December 28-29, February 10-11, March 27-28, May 12-13, June 28-29, August 14-15, September 30 or November 14-15, the Full Moon influences may affect you personally.

Also, around this April 11 Full Moon period there are possible arrests, isolation and the atmosphere is tense and stressful.

Some of you may feel betrayed, disappointed and/or dismissed.

Following astrometeorology, the current astrological patterns indicate stormy weather here and there.

If you are born around January 11-12, February 25, April 11, May 28, July 14, August 30, October 15 or November 28-29, the Full Moon influences may especially apply to you.

The Sun and Uranus meet at 24° Aries around April 14, suggesting the uncovering and disclosure of lies, the end of an era and liberating influences thanks to exposing "the truth."

This very upsetting conjunction in pioneering and pushy Aries will add to increased awareness and insight.

At 24° Aries, it's the conjunction of exposure and it marks the end of a seemingly stable period.

Things are not only moving, they are turning around completely.

Some of you are now moving, changing the residence and, interestingly, this may go hand in hand with changes at the working floor, job- or career-related changes at the same time.

In short, this conjunction implies changes and milestones that may go to the core of your existence.

Following astrometeorology, this conjunction may mark some geophysical changes.

Around April 15 Venus at 26° Pisces stations and turns direct again.

You tend to escape, quit, flee away, abandon relationships (in the widest sense), often to become independent and go your own way.

Mid April promises to become upsetting, tense and violent with possible accidents (in the widest sense), increased irritation with changes which alter conservative traditions and/or fixed habits, impatience with radicals who insist upon new ways and struggles to impose changes upon people who show loyalty to traditional methods, among others.

The current position of transiting Mars at the Fixed Star Algol adds to it.

Try to keep calm.

The Sun enters stable and inert Taurus around April 19 and will conjunct Mercury at 0° Taurus the day after.

There is some information, news or a document pertaining to your material existence, covering money and/or possessions.

Perhaps there are invoices and/or agreements you need to take a look at.

Pluto stations at 19° Capricorn around April 20, ready to regress.

This heavy transit intensifies power struggles in or with the corporate and banking world, governments, conservative idea(l)s, higher-ups, celebrities, leaders, bosses etc.

In the earth sign Capricorn, representing masks, the surface of the planet and fences, retrograde Pluto of the underworld is going to delve deeper below the surface like never before.

It will resurface when it goes direct again around September 28.

In astrometeorology, stationing Pluto in Capricorn may add to natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, mining accidents and other 'earth'-related issues.

Because Pluto rules the fixed water sign Scorpio, it always results in issues or events with a huge emotional impact (i.e. shocks).

Around the same day of April 20, retrograde Mercury re-enters Aries indicating a cautious approach in communication.

However, with the additional ingress of Mars in talkative Gemini around April 21, any information issued now may have to be re-written, re-considered later on.

For the 2nd time this month, Venus (which is now direct, remember?) at 27° Pisces squares stationing Saturn at 27° Sagittarius; a very calculating aspect.

You may try to keep up appearances and tend to lament.

You feel dissatisfied on an inner level about your love life and/or your financial situation.

The time is not right for purchases and instead you're holding tight to your possessions and/or money like a miser.

If you are born around January 17, February 1, February 15-16, March 17-18, April 17, May 2, May 18, June 18, July 19-20, August 4, August 20, September 20, October 20, November 4, November 19 or December 18-19, the Venus-Saturn aspect is likely to affect you again.

At 0° Gemini, Mars is often "on the road", nowhere at home and currently in a very accident-prone position, adding to the possibility of (traffic-)accidents and/or violence resulting in physical injuries for many people.

This is even reinforced because Mars at 0° Gemini also squares the mean Lunar Nodes around April 22.

Readers of our monthly forecasts will already know that any challenging Mars-Lunar Node contact involves physical injuries affecting many people at once as long as the aspect is in orb.

This clearly is a period of deceit, confusion, mental restlessness, not being able to get in touch with someone or with others, separation, to be rejected, betrayal, withdrawal, to be dismissed, incomprehension and/or sadness.

If you are born around January 18, March 3-4, April 18, June 3-4, July 21, September 5-6, October 21, or December 5, these astrological influences will likely affect you most.

Around April 28, Venus re-enters Aries, the mean North Node of the Moon enters Leo and retrograde Mercury and Uranus conjoin at 25° Aries.

Have we already mentioned that this month of April would be a busy month? LOL

The entrance of Venus in impulsive Aries may result in love at first sight.

In this position Venus is also highly attracted to the armed forces (the police and the military).

The mean North Node of the Moon changing signs is important because it marks the beginning of a new period with new connections and contracts or agreements.

In Leo, the Lunar North Node wants you to express yourself more creatively.

Develop self-confidence, stand on your own but still radiate warmth.

You cannot lean on anyone and need to be more self-reliant but try not to be too haughty and let go your selfish ego.

When Mercury and Uranus meet, there is some nervousness and chances are communication is interrupted.

Breaking news and a tendency to contradict others may be observed.

Usually, any Mercury-Uranus combination is not that tactful and chances are agreements and/or negotiations are compromised or interrupted.

Keen and innovative insight and thinking outside of the box rule and may resolve issues.

Around April 30 retrograde Saturn at 27° Sagittarius squares Chiron at 27° Pisces, presenting a reality check.

If you are born around January 17, February 1, February 15-16, March 17-18, April 17, May 2, May 18, June 18, July 19-20, August 4, August 20, September 20, October 20, November 4, November 19 or December 18-19 you will face some hardship (especially on a physical level) late April.

The Elemental Division In Synastry

The elements (fire, earth, air and water) are part of the foundation of astrology.

They are what this Universe is made of and they build the principles and functions of life and all that it contains (in the widest sense).

Moreover, we may assume the elements act like (or are?) electromagnetic forces that combine, attract and repel each other.

There are 'positive' (extravert, outward going or centrifugal, active) forces (air and fire) and 'negative' (introvert, inward going or centripetal, passive) forces (water and earth).

This (polarized) division is also what the tropical zodiac signs are about and these elements give the zodiac signs a meaning, characteristics, traits, temperaments.

They give the zodiac signs "a life."

According to the planets in the zodiac signs, the elements become emphasized, resulting in corresponding life experiences, events and more.

Because of the polarization and emphasis or non-emphasis of an element, it will play a role in attracting others.

Hence, the elemental division is a tool that cannot and should not be omitted in synastry.

How to proceed?

First of all, we need to take a look at the elemental division in each natal chart separately.

There are different ways to find out the emphasis of an element:
  • some astrologers count the planets in an element to find the emphasis
  • other astrologer give scores to a planet (slow-moving planets are often left out or given a low score while the faster moving, personal bodies, receive a higher score to give more weight)
  • yet other astrologers incorporate the asteroids and/or other bodies and points to find out the emphasis
  • and then there are astrologers that also assign a score to the ruler of the Ascendant and/or MC and/or dispositor of the Sun sign etc...
You might want to experiment yourself to find out what works best for you.

It's already clear that the weakness of this method is that giving scores and/or incorporating more and more bodies or points is going to give different results.

This may question the reliability of this method.

The jury is still out on finding what scores and how many planets/bodies work best but in our opinion and following our own experience and research it's best to take a conservative approach, especially if you are a beginner.

We recommend that you do not just count the number of planets in the same element, but rather give them a weighing according to the following rule:
  • the Sun, Moon, Ascendant and MC get 3 points;
  • Mercury, Venus and Mars get 2 points;
  • Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto get 1 point.
For example: when Mercury, Saturn and Pluto are in Water signs, the total Water score would be 2 (for Mercury) + 1 (for Saturn) + 1 (for Pluto) = 4.

This method is quite reliable as it is.

Now you can find out the emphasis on an element in a natal chart.

In synastry, we look for compatibility and balance.

Hence, it's always best when one partner fills the lacking or non-emphasized element of the other.

What one partner lacks, the other should have in abundance.

If both partners have the same elemental emphasis, there can be attraction too, but both partners will over-emphasize the predominant element and will not really find balance.

They will not develop the less emphasized element(s) with the help of each other.

So, for example, if you lack water, it's best to find a partner who has more water in his or her natal chart than you have.

When you have found your predominant element and the one of your partner, it does not stop here though.

It's important to follow the same rules or steps with the qualities (cardinal, fixed and mutable signs) and find out the predominant quality as well.

In short, we need the predominant element AND the predominant quality in the natal chart of each partner!

Once we have found the predominant element and predominant quality in each natal chart, we can convert these to a zodiac sign:
  • predominant fire + predominant cardinal = Aries
  • predominant earth + predominant fixed = Taurus
  • predominant air + predominant mutable = Gemini
  • predominant water + predominant cardinal = Cancer
  • predominant fire + predominant fixed = Leo
  • predominant earth + predominant mutable = Virgo
  • predominant air + predominant cardinal = Libra
  • predominant water + predominant fixed = Scorpio
  • predominant fire + predominant mutable = Sagittarius
  • predominant earth + predominant cardinal = Capricorn
  • predominant air + predominant fixed = Aquarius
  • predominant water + predominant mutable = Pisces
Now that we have found a predominant zodiac sign for each partner, we can compare these signs according to the natural order of the zodiac signs to find out how well they cope.

As a side note, the predominant zodiac sign we just found may or may not be the same as the Sun sign, but that does not matter.

It's the predominant zodiac sign that colors the native most, beyond the sun sign.

Zodiac signs that are the same, that sextile or trine each other are compatible.

When your zodiac sign is compatible with the zodiac sign of your partner, you are likely to be compatible as a couple and may agree more often than not.

Your relationship is likely to be more harmonious and less upsetting.

If your zodiac signs square each other in the natural order of the zodiac, (temperamental) clashes and disagreements may occur.

Some examples:
  • Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward: Paul Newman has predominant water + predominant cardinal = Cancer; Joanne Woodward has predominant water + predominant mutable = Pisces.

Cancer and Pisces are compatible zodiac signs in the natural order of the zodiac because they trine each other.

It does not wonder they were very compatible and made a happy union.

  • Sonny Bono and Cher: Sonny Bono has predominant air + predominant cardinal = Libra; Cher has predominant earth + predominant cardinal = Capricorn.

Libra and Capricorn square each other in the natural order of the zodiac signs denoting (temperamental) clashes.

    The couple married and divorced.
Beware though: this method is only one of other methods to take into account when assessing a couple for compatibility!

Also, the method has its weaknesses or downsides:
  • the results depend on the scores, the planets, bodies and points you take into account.

You can make it as complicated as you wish by building formulas and weighing scores for every planet, body, point you want to incorporate.

It's likely, in the future some computerized models may be available that do the weighing in a reliable way after intensive research and comparison.
  • if a natal chart has two predominant elements (with the same scores), it becomes more complicated because the native may be "ruled" by two predominant zodiac signs that may or may not be compatible with the predominant zodiac sign of the other partner.

In this case, the relationship most often becomes (more) complicated and upsetting as well.
