CosmiTec's Love Letter, Issue #080 --Ashtakoot Compatibility
July 21, 2011
Dear

From now on we will use an additional technique in our monthly love forecasts. It's a method that we already use for long when we assess natal charts. The method is based on the ancient Babylonian 30° stack.

So, actually, this is not really something new but it has not been used in mundane astrology before.

Since writing our monthly forecasts, we have been following the technique in the background though to see if it can be applied in mundane astrology as well. Without any doubt, it can.

If planets align in the 30° stack, they do manifest according to their basic meaning.

While the method brings stunning and jaw-dropping results in natal charts (outerly visible in the life of the native), we were not sure if it would also manifest in mundane astrology. We were not sure if this method would affect the masses at all and in what way.

Beyond a doubt, without taking into account a natal chart, transiting planetary alignments in the 30° stack show Zeitgeist, the general atmosphere and energy patterns that affect many people worldwide in different places or areas at the same moment of the alignments. August 17, 2011 will be such a day for example.

We noticed that the patterns do not always work out worldwide for millions of people though, but, depending upon the position and the planets involved, they work out for a whole lot of people in a certain area as long as the planets are in an exact alignment.

We did not have the time to find out which specific areas, countries and places on earth could be affected.

The first question we wanted to answer was IF the method could be used in mundane astrology at all. Now that we can confirm this, we can try to find out where on earth a pattern is likely to be more powerful and prominent by studying the Astromaps (astro*carto*graphy).

That's another story that we will try to research some time in the future, only after a lot of other more urgent and important research projects and after we overhauled our web site.

Enjoy the days
Luc De Jaeger

Love Forecasts for August 2011

The Sun at 9° Leo squares Jupiter at 9° Taurus around August 1. You are very confident and tend to overdo especially in financial matters. You may experience a lot of joy if you are born around January 25, February 23, March 25, April 25, May 26, June 26, July 28, August 28, September 28, October 28, November 27 or December 26.

Mercury stations around August 3 at 1° Virgo and starts its backward movement till August 27. If you are born under the zodiac signs of Gemini or Virgo or if your Ascendant is Gemini or Virgo, you better slow down a bit as things are not really going fully in your favor. You may withdraw and need some time to ponder on your own.

Around the same day of August 3, Mars enters emotional and vacillating Cancer, resulting in home-bound and domestic activities. If you need to do some home-improvements, now is the time.

Retrograde Neptune enters Aquarius again and is still in a difficult and chaotic borderline position.

Around the same day of August 5, Venus at 9° Leo squares Jupiter at 9° Taurus. Actually, because Venus is the dispositor of Jupiter (Jupiter is in Taurus which is ruled by Venus), there are financial expenses. You don't have a clear and realistic view on your possessions and may be in for a surprise.

In matters of love, you may currently see it too rosy. Love may cost you an arm and a leg ;-)

Retrograde Mercury enters playful Leo around August 8 and loves a party and some drama. Enjoy going to a theatre, a comedy or a concert. In fiery Leo, Mercury is more noisy and loves a chat.

However, because Mercury also opposes Neptune, there is likely going to be lots of miscommunication or non-communication -- possibly due to the noise. Slapstick humor works best around these days.

Between August 9-11, Mars at 4° Cancer builds up heat and tension when it first squares Uranus at 4° Aries (around August 9) and then opposes Pluto at 5° Capricorn around August 11. This is a very fanatic combination of pushing through one's religious or idealistic ideas and points of view. There is a highly explosive and aggressive atmosphere noticeable in this time frame and this combo is also related to physical injuries for lots of people. You better watch out!

The Full Moon of August 12-13 will bring some love encounters and romantic moments if you are born around February 8, March 25, May 10, June 26, August 12, September 28, November 12 or December 26.

August 14 is a lovely day if you are born around this day, April 10-11 or December 13. You are favored too if you are born around January 11, February 9-10, March 11, May 11, June 12, July 13, September 13-14, October 14 or November 13. Enjoy a party or any other festivity.

Around August 16, the Sun and Venus conjoin at 23° Leo, resulting in a powerful combination of playful love. Mercury will also conjoin Venus around August 17 and the Sun will follow immediately after it. This will be a funny time for some of you.

However, if you are born around December 30-31, February 12-13, March 29-30, May 14-15, June 30-July 1, August 16-17, October 1-2, November 16-17 or December 30-31, you better watch out for disputes that may get out of hand and/or physical injuries. There are very disruptive and challenging configurations going on, so try to keep your head cool and, above all, mind your words. It's an accident-prone period for you between August 16-18.

Venus at 29° Leo opposes Neptune at 29° Aquarius around August 21, resulting in love's sorrow and sadness. The 29 degrees often mark endings, and this will be no exception here when the planet of love at an ending degree opposes dissolving Neptune. This is a combo of farewell and unfulfilled longings towards an absent loved one.

Venus enters shy Virgo around August 22 and is in a very subordinate (and submissive) position.

The Sun at 29° Leo opposes Neptune at 29° Aquarius around August 23 just before it will enter Virgo on the same day. Someone is absent (often a male person because of the Sun).

Around August 25, Mars at 14° Cancer squares Saturn at 14° Libra signifying emotional and upsetting moments of anger.

Mercury stations around August 27 at 18° Leo; ready to move forward again. The silence is over and your mind will clear up. However, if you are born around this day, January 24, February 22, March 24, April 25, May 26, June 25, July 27, September 27, October 27, November 26 or December 25-26, you may be in for unexpected surprises. Don't trust any electronic gadgets or computers, nor public transportation services as there may be some limiting influences going on.

Jupiter stations at 10° Taurus around August 30 and starts its retrograde motion. If you are born under the zodiac sign of Sagittarius or if your Ascendant is Sagittarius, life may not alwyas go as smoothly during the station. You will need some more patience.

Beware of promises or expectations that may not be delivered. Things and people may seem too beautiful, too nice, to xxx (just fill in) to be true.

What's New on Our Web Site?

Since our last Love Letter, we updated our web site with the following changes and additions:
  • we updated and expanded our Moon signs page
  • not visible to the eye, but as mentioned in the introduction, our monthly forecasts now include an analysis of the planetary positions in the 30° stack. We scan all the days in the month for planetary alignments and if we find one (or more), it will be delineated.

  • we now also include a (Vedic) Ashtakoot compatibility analysis in our compatibility reports. We updated our pages accordingly. There is no price increase involved though. More about Ashtakoot Compatibility in this Love Letter.

  • we added a Facebook like button at the bottom of all our pages, aside from the Facebook share button.

Most people confuse both buttons, but a 'like' button is not the same as a 'share' button.

Sharing results in posting the complete link of the page to your wall, while liking is voting and posts a short note on your wall saying that you like a page.

We also added Facebook Like buttons on top of the right column on some pages as we still try to find out the best placement for such buttons.

If you are not logged in to Facebook, a login window opens when you click on the like button (on condition that no pop-up blocker blocks the window). Loggin in registers your like with Facebook.

A Google +1 button will soon be added too and if possible a Twitter button as well.

Because of the imminent launch of Google+, Google's answer to both Facebook AND Twitter, we soon expect other changes to happen that may interfere with how we are planning the new look & feel of our web site. We're following this closely.

As things go, it's likely Google+ is able to defeat Twitter in the short run, Facebook in the longer run.

Clearly, social media will experience another revolution in the coming months. That's another event related to the upcoming Uranus (ICT) - Pluto (transformations) square (of taking action). The battle will continue more intensely ;-)

As soon as Google+ release its business pages, we'll get an account and let you know. To be continued...

  • we added another review on our book reviews page
  • we updated our Jennifer Lopez page with the announcement of her divorce after a marriage of 7 years with Marc Anthony. It's the 3rd divorce of Jennifer Lopez. You may notice that the divorce does not come as a surprise if you check her wedding chart.

Ashtakoot Compatibility

In India, matchmaking with the help of astrology is a daily business and routine. Seldom, a couple is married without consulting an astrologer. Different methods are used but one of the most common ones is called Ashtakoot or Ashtkoot matching/compatibility.

Because Vedic, Hindu or Indian astrology is primarily Moon-oriented, basic compatibility is found in matching the Moon position of the partners. However, in real traditional Vedic astrology, this method is not the first an astrologer will apply. Oddly enough, any serious Vedic astrologer will first analyze the natal charts for
  1. longevity
  2. the mental health of the partners
  3. factors showing more than one marriage
  4. any malefic configurations, combos (yogas)
BEFORE assessing Moon compatibility.

Now, that's quite a difference with our Western astrology!

In India, matching is a real time-consuming process of drawing and delineating numerous charts. Something that cannot be done by novices.

As always, when things become too time-consuming and complicated, more vulgarized, simplier and easier methods enter the public domain. Sun sign "astrology" in the Western world has taken over real astrology.

And so it happened that Ashtakoot Compatibility became the only tool or method in the Western world to match charts the Vedic way.

This does not mean that Ashtakoot Compatibility is worthless. On the contrary! It's just one single method that, because of its simplicity, became the single most used method.

In some cases, Ashtakoot compatibility is also called Kuta matching or agreement. In yet other cases, it's called Guna matching or Poruttham agreement.

What is this method all about?

Actually, the two natal charts of the partners are analyzed for compatibility regarding 8 factors. Each factor gets a score. The higher the score, the better.

The total score for all 8 factors cannot exceed 36. A total score of 36 would mean perfect compatibility while a score of 18 is problematic.

Sometimes you will read about 10 (porutthams or kutams) or 12 factors, depending on the source but we'll keep it to the easiest method that consists of 8 factors.

These 8 factors are:
  • Varna: this factor represents the spiritual development of the partners
  • Vasya: this factor describes the degree to influence the other partner
  • Dina or Tara: this factor measures the number of Nakshatras between the Moon positions of the partners
  • Yoni: this factor measures sexual compatibility. We discussed this method on our Vedic sex horoscopes page http://tiny.cc/1pkb8
  • Graha Maitri: this factor reflects the mental compatibility and affection. This score is about friendship
  • Gana: this one is about the temperament and it's adviced to have the same temperament as your partner
  • Rasi: this Kuta describes the relationship between the Moon signs (and Nakshatras) of the partners
  • Nadi: this factor is about progeny and children. In some ways it also relates to health issues between the partners
The criticism about the Ashtakoot Compatibility can be summarized as follows.
  • In India domestic harmony and sharing the same background is very important and the factors are related to attaining this goal. They don't take into account romantic desires for example.
  • The scores are not about whether or not there will be a happy marriage. The factors are just about sharing the same values, most often in a close knit community
  • Ashtakoot Compatibility has always been just ONE method beside other methods and it should be handled as such. Ashtakoot compatibility should never be used in isolation as a stand alone advice.
  • the method only takes into account the Moon's positions. There is more to compatibility than comparing the Moon's positions alone though. While the Moon points to one's Comfort Zone and is extremely important, the Ascendant, Sun, Venus and Mars positions should not be underestimated, neither should be the other planets and points.

Some astrologers recommend using the 8 factors for the position of the Ascendant of the partners too.
The value of the method is that it gives insight in how two partners share the same values and harmony, which is important in any love relationship. But, it's not the only thing that counts.

So, if you notice a low total score, this is not alarming but it points to some disharmonious factors that need to be worked on. If you have a very high score, it will not necessarily presage a happy marriage at all.

The bottom line is that Ashtakoot Compatibility has its merit IF you take other methods into account too.
