When talking about sign compatibility most people talk about Sun sign compatibility.
Indeed, when people speak about their sign, they mean their Sun sign. When you say that you're a Scorpio, this only means that, at the time of your birth, the Sun was in the sign of Scorpio.
BUT the Sun is just one single point in the horoscope. There are the other points and planets too: the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the Moon's Node (to name just these!).
Each planet has a different meaning.
The Sun symbolizes - among other things - your vital energy, willpower, the self, the ego and your physical body and its expression.
The Moon signifies your mood, emotions, instinctive needs for comfort and security etc....
According to their position in the natal chart and in the astrological signs, all planets have their particular meaning.
When we talked about sign compatibility we already mentioned that sign compatibility is related to the four elements. With sun sign compatibility it's mere the same. Sun signs are compatible when they are posited in signs of the same or a compatible element.
But if you only compare the sun signs you are only looking at the possible solar compatibility (Sun sign compatibility) and neglecting all the rest.
And, by the way, do you think that a Virgo is ALWAYS compatible with all capricorns? Nope!
So, you see, it has no sense to only compare the Sun signs and look at Sun sign compatibility because you only have a very very small and incomplete piece of the total part.
Read more about the truth about (Sun sign) compatibility in Carol Allen's splendid and highly insightful book Love is in the Stars.
Sun sign compatibility does make astrology more intelligible for the general public (most people know their Sun sign) and that's why this kind of sign compatibility is so widespread.
You need no computerprogram to know your and your partner's Sun sign. This is also due to the fact that the Earth's path around the Sun is fairly regular so that it's place in the zodiac can be determined by reference to a calendar day.
This cannot be said of the position of the other points and planets.
However, this does not mean that Sun sign compatibility is useless or worthless.
On the contrary!
You may be happy to know that some research exists that points to statistical significant results re Sun sign compatibility!
In Switzerland, Gunter Sachs has done some scientific research (with the help of the Faculty of Statistics of the "Ludwig-Maximilians-University" in München, Germany) during 1995-1997.
Though the results of the research were highly significant in favor of astrology, the research was very controversial and much disputed.
Of most interest here, is the fact that his research has been looking at Sun sign compatibility too, delivering highly significant results as well.
Only a few people know that Gunter Sachs' research was done over in France, during 1999 by Didier Castille.
The results re the investigation on Sun sign compatibility confirmed the results by Sachs!
What have these investigations found?
There is a highly significant correlation that a marriage occurs when partners have the following Sun sign (meaning that there is a lot of attraction):

When the researchers took the number of divorces between the Sun signs into consideration, the following results showed a highly significant correlation of endurability in marriage:
Male Sun sign
Female Sun sign

So, Sun sign compatibility absolutely has its merit, but our point is just that mere Sun sign compatibility is INCOMPLETE.
After all it's just statistics, and your reality can be totally different!
Because this kind of trivial and popular 'astrology' is so far off from the real astrology, you will not find any further tables on this Web site showing how aries and virgo or pisces etc... relate to one another, except when some research shows significant correlations.
Understand that such superficial and even simplistic comparisons of Sun sign compatibility -- alone -- do NOT help you when you're looking for your SOULMATE, your EVER-LASTING-AND-ONLY-ONE in the whole world...
Yes, it's not about the milkman we're talking here, nor the postman, except when they are your partner ;-).
It's about your buddy. Right ? So, we think you expect (and deserve !) some more complete, decent and reliable information than just Sun sign compatibility, no?
However, if the real astrology is too complicated for you (and it is complex indeed !) and if you still are interested in a more general approach or overview of some characteristics of your mate and your relationship, based on Sun sign compatibility, we have an interesting and revealing recommendation for you.
We have read an awful lot of books about 'Sun signs' and Sun sign compatibility and think that the (weighty) book entitled The Secret Language of Relationships(reissue) by Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers is by far the best you can find.
Their descriptions on compatibility are at times really very stunning.
The reason is that both authors have replaced the twelve zodiac signs by forty-eight periods of the year - twelve cusps and thirty-six weeks giving 1,176 descriptions of different relationships (so this book goes further than the simple 12 Sun signs and mere Sun sign compatibility).
The book contains a very handy relationship location finder (based on the birthdays) so that you can very easily jump to the description of the relationship profile of you and your partner.
In fact, we at CosmiTec often refer to this book for some basic information.
This book is a beautiful example and a proof that the more we can individualize the position of the planets, the better the personality and relationship profiles are.
In the same way we can individualize the 12 'Sun signs' for a better sun sign compatibility by dividing these signs in different parts.
Ancient astrologers (especially the traditional astrologers) divided the astrological or zodiac signs (that count 30° each) in 3 equal parts of 10° (called decans or decanates).
Hindu (Indian, Vedic or Jyotish) astrologers even go further and divide the astrological or zodiac signs in 12 parts of 2°30', counting from 0° aries (called dwadasamas or dwads).
Each decan (3rd part of a sign) corresponds with the sign (and its ruler) of the same triplicity (element) and 'colors' the planets in that decan accordingly. For your information, we have included the following table/overview:

However, because there is too much controversy among astrologers to which system is more accurate, we will not go further into this subject of more personalized sun sign compatibility.
In fact, we at CosmiTec have not researched this topic and - for the moment - do not find this division overly important. We just give this information so you can experiment with it.
Each dwad corresponds with another sign in the natural order of the signs in the zodiac (the first 2°30' of Aries belong to Aries, the second 2°30' belong to Taurus, the next 2°30' belong to Gemini etc.).
Both of these divisions already can give a much more detailed and individualized picture of the person. This kind of a more personalized Sun sign compatibility is more valuable than the popular sun sign compatibility.
So, for example, when your Sun is located at 23°25' Aries, the Sun belongs to the third decanate of Aries (characteristics of Sagittarius in the traditional system) and occupies the 10th dwad (with characteristics of Capricorn).
The meanings of the Sun (your body, willpower etc...) have to be mixed with the characteristics of Sagittarius and Capricorn. In this example this would mean that the willpower (Sun) is directed towards the society and social problems.
Because the Sun symbolizes the body too, we can often find that persons born on that day (13-14 april) have a rather thin and tall stature, IF no other factors dominate.
When this person relates with someone whose Sun is located at 28° Leo (the aries decan in the traditional system and cancer dwad), you can tell that both partners have totally different interests.
But again, we will not go further into this kind of Sun sign compatibility, because we at CosmiTec have not researched this topic enough to tell what it's worth. Just try this out for yourself.
As part of a total compatibility analysis Lois Haines Sargent (in her standard book 'How to handle your human relations') first considers Sun sign compatibility by looking at the respective Suns in the horoscopes when analyzing endurability.
According to this author, the respective Suns represent the individuality and temperament and when the individuals are pulling in different directions, it may be a hazard to marital adjustment.
But Ms. Sargent goes further too...
She mentions that many individuals are attracted to others born in signs in which the respective decans are sub-ruled by the same planets.
In such combinations she has found that there will be a similarity of viewpoint, though further on she points that, regardless of the position of the respective suns, we need other astrological factors to judge endurability.
It's clear that endurability is just only one important component of relationships and that Sun signs alone ar not a good measure of astrological compatibility.
We at CosmiTec have found that, apart from the position of the Sun, there is a more important basic factor than Sun sign compatibility:
the moon signs and moon sign compatibility.
