To understand the concept of Moon Mars connections we first have to go back into the past for a moment.
In the early 80s a "new" approach of assessing major themes in a natal chart saw the light by the "invention" of the so-called "ZIP Code."
It was a method invented by Dr. Zipporah Dobyns (hence the name "ZIP Code") and further propagated by her daughter Maritha Pottenger, that made use of the so-called astrological alphabet.
The concept of the astrological alphabet is that astrology deals with twelve basic ways of being, twelve human drives and modes of operation that are all needed in this world.
These twelve sides of life are mirrored in the natal chart by a planet, a house and a sign.
So it is in the astrological alphabet that Mars, the 1st house and Aries all share the same principles (though they are NOT the same!).
Venus, the 2nd house and Taurus also share the same principles and this goes on for the other planets, signs and houses.
What the theory of the ZIP Code or astrological alphabet presents is that certain groups of planet/house/sign combinations share similar themes.
For example: Mars in Libra or Mars in the 7th house share the same principles. The 7th house is in mundane astrology a Libra house (whatever zodiac sign is on the cusp of the 7th house in the natal chart).
This system has been enhanced by German astrologers who developed their own system based on the same principles but they converted the signs and houses to their respective planetary rulers.
For example: Mars in Libra becomes a Mars/Venus theme because Venus always rules Libra. Mars in the 7th house too becomes a Mars/Venus theme because the 7th house is associated with Libra, which is ruled by Venus in mundane astrology.
Also, the ruler of the 1st house (in mundane astrology ruled by Mars because Mars always rules Aries and Aries is always the 1st sign in the natural order of the zodiac) in the 2nd house (in mundane astrology ruled by Venus as the ruler of Taurus) is another Venus-Mars analogy.
The more you find such analogies, themes or connections between two planets, the more this planetary combination becomes an important part of the natal chart and the life of the native.
To find out the connections or analogies between planets, we take especially into account:
Planets in houses are more important and powerful than the planets in the zodiac signs because they work on a more personal and individual level (we use the Topocentric house system which gives almost the same results as the Placidus house system).
When do we have Moon Mars connections, themes or analogies?
In most cases, the following configurations are used (there are more though (!) to define Moon Mars connections but this would lead us too far and make it more complicated than necessary):
When at least three of the above listed analogies or connections can be found in the natal chart, we have a very powerful Moon Mars connection that will be felt and noticed in the character and life of the native.
What do Moon Mars connections signify?
Both, the Moon and Mars rule cardinal signs, that are easily 'triggered', act on primal impulses and flashes that start or ignite something, or compel to 'do' something.
However, both 'planets' don't get on well with each other because the sensitive and emotional Moon cannot cope with the direct and sharp characteristics of Mars.
Hence, whenever they are connected, they point to some battle, some clash, some unease or discomfort, of whatever kind.
In numerous instances, research has shown that a dominant mother figure can be part of this unease.
People who have predominant Moon Mars connections had to obey or comply to a domineering mother figure against their own identity and Self.
The mother was imposing her life on the native, too present at times, crossing lines or boundaries, resulting in growing discontent.
In some instances, this resulted in turning aggression inwards through self-mutilation and/or eating disorders.
Often signs or indications of a lack of self-worth or being blocked from being yourself are part of this planetary connection.
Especially the self-mutilation part (cutting into your skin or body with a knife, for example) is very telling as Mars rules knives and the Moon rules your comfort zone and emotions.
But, at times, the self-mutilation can become obvious by less noticeable or visible indications by making choices against the own good or always opting for removing body organs surgically, for example.
People who have predominant Moon Mars connections aim high and want to deliver top performance, always.
They want to excel and live 'on the edge', in an often tense way because they want to compete.
They easily feel challenged by external situations or the environment.
There often is a lack of primal trust noticeable and in the background, subconsciously, inner fear and angst is what drives them to accomplish and/or initiate something.
There is an inner nervousness, insecurity that seems to be always present 24/7.
Moon Mars connections often point to unpleasant domestic childhood experiences full of discord and a lack of respect and support for accomplishments.
People with strong Moon Mars connections feel emotionally hurt very easily, often resulting in impulsive angry attacks and moody behavior.
In matters of love and romance, these people love to cuddle or caress even though, in practice, prohibitions may add to the discontent and negative energies turning inwards.
Women who have predominant Moon Mars connections tend to reject men or feel angry about them while men who have strong Moon Mars connections tend to avoid women or are attracted to strong(er) ones.
